"colliding phenomena": Susan Howe's Factual Telepathy

Susan Howe was the 1993–1994 Leo Block Professor at the University of Denver. Her work has received numerous awards, including the 1980 American Book Award, the 2011 Bollingen Prize in American Poetry and the 2017 Frost Medal from the Poetry Society of America. Howe is a prolific poet and essayist who creates at the intersections of manuscripts, abstract minimalisms, gallery installations, sonic materialisms and book arts. For Howe, poetry embodies “factual telepathy” that transcends fields and methods, transfiguring her audiences with collaborative agency. This presentation will explore Howe’s cross-disciplinary and multimedia pursuit of such “colliding phenomena” through a selection of her manuscripts, typescripts and published works from “The End of Art” (1974) to Concordance (2020).

Scott Howard is a Professor in the Department of English & Literary Arts and the Editor of Denver Quarterly. He is the author of Archive and Artifact: Susan Howe’s Factual Telepathy (Talisman House, 2019). His work has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Yale University and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Howard received the Dean’s Meritorious Sabbatical Award to support and strengthen faculty research for 2019–2020.
